Communities Sub-group
There are currently 14 drug and/or alcohol
forums across Glasgow. These vary greatly in terms of how
they are structured and the work they do. The majority of
forums work to address both drug and alcohol issues - although
often the main focus is on drug issues. Forums have an
important role in providing a local focus in responding to drug and
alcohol issues. In recent years forums have undertaken work
such as:
- Awareness
raising through events such as community seminars,
open days, conferences etc
- Challenging
attitudes and stereotypes surrounding drug and
alcohol use and those that use them.
-
Education and co-ordinating training events
for people living and working within their locality.
- Developing new
iniatives such as setting up youth projects,
establishing 'fitness schemes' and diversionary activities,
development of information resource library, etc
-
Research to identify issues of concern within
the community or with a focus on specific groups such as peer
research with drug users not in touch with any services or the
impact of drug use on families, carers and children of drug users,
and their support needs. This research has often led onto the
key findings directing future work of the forums.
